Subaru WRX STI Gets More Horsepower For The First Time In A Decade

Subaru WRX STI

The Subaru WRX STI has made 305 horsepower from its 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer-four for what seems like forever. Now, after 10 years, the standard STI is finally getting a power increase for the 2019 model year. How much power? You should sit down for this one.

Five horsepower. That’s right, five whole horsepower. STI fans, rejoice.

The massive bump in power comes courtesy of an updated 2.5-liter EJ engine sourced from the track-ready WRX STI Type RA. That means a new air intake, a higher-flow exhaust system, stronger pistons, and a retuned ECU. The six-speed manual transmission gets the revised third gear ratio from the Type RA as well, optimized for faster acceleration.

Along with the updated drivetrain, the 2019 STI gets a “Series.Gray” special edition model, which, as you could’ve guessed, comes exclusively in Gray—Cool Gray Khaki, specifically. (Photos of the Series.Gray are not yet available.) It also gets black-finish wheels, silver-painted brake calipers, black suede interior trim, eight-way power Recaro seats Bilstein dampers, and double wishbone rear suspension. Only 250 examples will be sold.

Pricing for the standard 2019 WRX STI starts at $37,480, while the Series.Gray starts at $39,695.
