Nissan veut apporter sa pierre à la reconquête de la Lune avec un rover d’exploration
Un nouveau projet pour conquérir la Lune. Début avril, le constructeur japonais Nissan a annoncé le développement d’un véhicule lunaire (Lunar Terrain Vehicle ou LTV) avec deux entreprises américaines, Sierra Space, implantée dans le Kentucky, et Teledyne Brown Engineering, en Alabama. Cet engin lunaire doit répondre aux attentes de la Nasa dans le cadre du programme Artemis, qui prévoit le retour de l’Homme sur la Lune. Nissan collabore désormais avec deux agences spatiales dans le monde, puisque le constructeur est impliqué dans un autre projet semblable avec l’agence spatiale japonaise (Jaxa).
C’est à Teledyne Brown Engineering que revient le pilotage de l’ensemble des travaux sur ce nouveau projet. Créée en 1953, cette entreprise d’ingénierie est spécialisée dans de nombreux domaines comme le spatial, l’énergie et le maritime. Pour le Lunar Terrain Vehicle, Teledyne sera responsable de l’ingénierie, de la production et du système d’alimentation. Récemment, l’entreprise a conçu et construit le premier des trois adaptateurs d’étage de lanceur du véhicule Artemis de la Nasa, dont le lancement est prévu à l’été.

Nissan, déjà engagé dans la conquête de la Lune
De son côté, Nissan développera la conduite autonome du véhicule. « Avec ce partenariat, nous allons explorer les possibilités d’autonomie et de téléopérations, les systèmes de gestion de l’alimentation, la connectivité des véhicules et l’interface homme-machine pour aider à façonner l’avenir des rovers lunaires intelligents, précise le constructeur japonais dans un communiqué. Nous traduirons ensuite ces enseignements du LTV opérant sur la surface lunaire vers la Terre. » Sierra Space fournira quant à lui des logiciels de vol, des mécanismes qualifiés pour l’espace, des communications, un pointage, une navigation et une synchronisation pour le LTV.
L’engin lunaire pourra accueillir un équipage. Hormis ces caractéristiques, peu de précisions techniques sont apportées par les trois entreprises engagées sur le projet. Il n’est pas mentionné par exemple la date de sortie du véhicule, ni ses dimensions.
En décembre 2021, Nissan avait déjà dévoilé le prototype d’un autre rover lunaire, développé conjointement avec l’agence spatiale japonaise. Conçu pour traverser des terrains poudreux, rocheux et vallonnés, ce rover embarque la même technologie de contrôle moteur que ses SUV Ariya pour améliorer l’adhérence du véhicule. Aucune date de lancement n’avait non plus été communiquée.
Ruée des constructeurs automobiles
Le programme Artemis a constitué un véritable moteur pour le développement de véhicules spatiaux. Depuis le lancement officiel de ce programme en 2019, les projets se multiplient. Le constructeur allemand Audi avait même pris de l’avance en dévoilant en 2016 un projet de petit robot mobile capable de parcourir 500 mètres et d’envoyer des photos et vidéos vers la Terre.
Les constructeurs japonais sont particulièrement mobilisés. En 2019, Toyota et la Jaxa ont démarré le projet « Lunar Cruiser », un véhicule tout-terrain pouvant embarquer des passagers et parcourir 10 000 kilomètres. Dédié à l’exploration de la Lune, son arrivée est prévue pour 2029. Toyota s’est également associé à sa filiale Lexus en 2020 pour imaginer des concepts un peu fantaisistes de véhicules lunaires.
Un autre constructeur japonais, Honda, a dévoilé ses ambitions pour l’espace en septembre 2021, lors de la présentation de sa feuille stratégique. Son projet, en collaboration avec la Jaxa, vise à concevoir un robot utilisé sur la Lune et contrôlé depuis la Terre.

Les équipementiers également dans la course
En dehors du Japon, le sud-coréen Hyundai a dévoilé en février 2021 une voiture autonome sans équipage, le Tiger X-1. Bien que le constructeur ait pris soin de ne pas mentionner l’exploration de la Lune dans la description de ce véhicule dédié aux « terrains éloignés ou inaccessibles », les paysages dans lesquels son image de synthèse est placée ne laissent guère de doute sur son objectif final.

Aux Etats-Unis, General Motors renoue avec les technologies spatiales. Après avoir produit un rover en 1971 pour les missions Apollo avec la Nasa, le géant américain a annoncé en mai 2021 sa collaboration avec Lockheed Martin pour construire un rover autonome. Ce véhicule est le fruit d’une commande de la Nasa pour embarquer les astronautes du programme Artemis.
De leur côté, les équipementiers se tiennent aussi prêts à proposer leurs technologies lunaires, comme le sud-coréen Hankook et Michelin, qui ont conçu un pneu sans air. Le pneu sans air doit simplifier considérablement la logistique des roues pour les rovers lunaires. Evidemment, la conquête de la Lune séduit aussi le grand public, comme ce designer moscovite qui a récemment imaginé et conçu un prototype de moto lunaire !
